Why We Need The WeBUILT Solution In
North Carolina
The need for a housing solution is pressing, given the disheartening circumstances in North Carolina. According to the Ancor Foundation study released in January 2019, North Carolina Ranks 41st among all states in efforts to serve individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).
According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, as of 2021, there were approximately 14,000 individuals waiting for access to Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) waiver slots, which are essential for enabling individuals with I/DD to live in community settings.
This significant backlog highlights the urgent need for expanded resources and innovative housing solutions to ensure that individuals with I/DD can access the support and services they deserve.
Our Journey Towards Sensory-Inclusive Housing In North Carolina
A group of parents identified that there are not enough suitable housing solutions for adult children with disabilities in North Carolina. This concerned group initiated an in-depth exploration that led to the discovery of the WeBUILT community, an innovative housing model in Clackamas, Oregon, developed by Ann Wilkinson in 2022. Ann, compelled by her desire to offer her son a safe, inclusive living environment that fosters independence, devised the WeBUILT concept. Today, various states are adopting this model, and we are proud to be partnering with Next Steps Strategies and Wilkes WeBUILT Advisory Board in Wilkes County, North Carolina.
Progress on the WeBUILT
Wilkes Plan
At LivingHope, we're excited to be partnering with Wilkes WeBUILT Advisory Board on advancing the WeBUILT Wilkes Plan. They've successfully secured a five-acre plot and obtained preliminary architectural designs, forming the groundwork for the project's initial trimester. This progress wouldn't be possible without support we've received from early generous donors, individuals, and organizations who passionately believe in their mission.

However, we're only at the start of our journey and we need more hands on deck. We're calling out to volunteers, donors, corporate sponsors, or mission champions to join us in making a difference. Involvement in the WeBUILT Wilkes project isn't just about giving; it's an opportunity to create substantial community impact by contributing to sustainable housing solutions. Join the LivingHope and the WeBUILT Wilkes community today and help us to create a better tomorrow.
